Teatro del Barrio opened its doors and stage in December 2013 with the aim of bringing together what the artistic community, the world of activism, thought and academia are thinking, researching and generating about the challenges of living together today, about the power structures that shape our relationships, and also about the cracks that appear to imagine other ways of being and living among ourselves. It does so from a holistic perspective that combines artistic, academic, philosophical and political languages, bringing together a variety of formats that, in their form, also reflect the multifaceted nature of society and the contemporary gaze. Recognised with the 2024 National Theatre Award, Teatro del Barrio is a small 131-seat theatre in the heart of Madrid, with an intensive programme of contemporary shows, the production of theatrical proposals that tour the country and abroad, and a close and rich connection with the surrounding area and neighbourhood.
